Mrs. Hopkins enjoys sharing the gift of music with her students and strives to provide a learning environment that is positive and fun. Her goal is to teach students to be excellent musicians so they can enjoy and express themselves through the language of music for the rest of their lives.
Teacher Education and Experience
Shelly Hopkins has maintained a private piano studio since 1991. She has a Bachelor of Music in Pedagogy and a Master of Education in Teaching Music from Bob Jones University. She has served in church music ministry since she was a teenager. Mrs. Hopkins has also taught violin, handbells, choral music, band, and general music in private schools for many years.
Lessons on a Bösendorfer grand piano at the Shrewsbury location, Student Online Accounts, Unlimited Piano Maestro Student Subscriptions for Home and Studio Use, iPad applications, Music software, Digital piano, Midi technology, Music lending library, and Incentives. Students are offered the opportunity to participate in the Royal Conservatory Performance Exams, the National Piano Guild Auditions All students are encouraged to play at the studio recitals.
Students are encouraged to arrive at each lesson punctually, well prepared, and with their assignment book and music. Consistent practice is necessary to make steady progress. Consistent practice yields steady improvement, which in turn leads to greater satisfaction and enjoyment of piano study.
Lesson Etiquette at Hopkins Piano, Shrewsbury Location
To respect each student’s lesson time, please arrive no earlier than two minutes before your lesson time. Due to limited seating, one adult guest is invited to attend lessons with the student. Menchey Students: Please go directly to the studio at your scheduled lesson time.
Piano: Students must have a piano at home available to them (a well-tuned acoustic piano that is in good condition or an 88-key digital piano with weighted keys). Mrs. Hopkins is happy to offer guidance in selecting a piano.
Metronome: Students need a metronome for home practice. There are many free metronome apps available.
Music: Students are responsible to pay for music needed for lessons.
Families may trade their lesson time with another student (Lesson Swap) to help avoid absences. All exchanges must be done parent to parent. The parent requesting the exchange is responsible to notify Mrs. Hopkins of any changes with 24 hours notice. If you want to participate, please notify Mrs. Hopkins.
Skype or Face Time Lessons
Skype or Face Time are very useful tools for teaching students who cannot make it to lesson due to inclement weather, mild illness, or other reasons. If you have a compatible device with a camera, please create a free Skype account and add Mrs. Hopkins to your contacts. Mrs. Hopkins’ Skype user name is shellydhopkins. Master Classes at Hopkins Piano Studio
There are four piano master classes during the year. These four Master Classes also provide an opportunity to make up for any missed lessons. Students must register online if they would like to attend. Master Class activities may include a chance to perform for peers in a relaxed setting, Theory & Ear Training games, and opportunities to explore music technology.
Tuition is charged by the month in advance, and is based on the number of scheduled lessons in the month. Tuition is due the last lesson of each month to reserve your lesson time for the upcoming month. Invoices are sent via email 7-10 days before tuition is due. A late fee of $15 will be added if payment is not made by the 7th of the month.
Hopkins Piano Tuition Rate per Private Lesson:
30-minute – $21, 45-minute – $31.50, 60-minute – $42
Menchey Music Tuition Rate per Private Lesson:
30-minute – $25, 45-minute – $37.50, 60-minute – $50
For example, Monthly Tuition for a Hopkins Piano student registered for a 30-minute weekly private lesson is $84 for a month with four lessons, or $104 for a month with five lessons.
Monthly Tuition for a Menchey student registered for a 30-minute weekly private lesson is $100 for a month with four lessons, or $125 for a month with five lessons.
Invoices will be sent each month by email. Payment is due by the last lesson of each month to reserve the lesson time for the upcoming month. Please note that there is a $15 late fee if payment is not received by the 7th. Lessons will be suspended until the tuition and late fee are paid. Your timely payment is appreciated. For your convenience, several payment options are available.
Bill Pay: Pay is quicker and easier than writing and mailing paper checks, and you have the assurance of knows your payment will be received on time every month. To add Shelly Hopkins as a Payee, sign in to your online bank account and select the “Bill Pay” tab. Manually enter the payee’s name (Shelly Hopkins), address, and ZIP code under “Add New Payee.” No account numbers need to be exchanged. The payment information is:

Cash: Exact change is appreciated.
Check: Please make checks payable to, “Shelly Hopkins.” Returned check fee is $35 plus any additional bank fees incurred. If more than one payment is returned, all future payments must be cash/money order.
PayPal: There is a 4.5% convenience fee added to each transaction to cover fees charged by PayPal. Please use the email, firstname.lastname@example.org, for payment. A PayPal card reader is available if you choose to pay in person.
